Abstract

The focus of this thesis is the art of clowning through its dramaturgical perspective. The artistic work of clowns involves the practice of an industry of dramaturgical procedures that vary with the artist, his tradition, shows, impact, and produce a number of other meanings according to the reception of the audience of each performance. It is a complex, controversial and fascinating theme for the diversity of views that it forces us to recognize in an art form which, when well executed, reaches us the spectators as such a simple, banal, silly and stupid event that we hardly believe there is any labor at all behind this comic effect. Laughter, comic action, history of clowns and especially examples of clowning nowadays are the main topics discussed of this thesis.
